Day 1

"25 Days" kicked off last night in a gathering in the edifice of Old North. Studded with balloons and provided with Booey's, Old North provided an intimate setting for the 25 Days Committee, the Re-Imagine Georgetown Committee, many project leads and other participants to mingle and reflect on the meaning of service and its importance at Georgetown.

Deion Simmons (COL '10), a member of the 25 Days Steering Committee, acted as MC, and began by describing his first experiences performing service at his home in Buffalo.

After other members of the Steering Committee spoke about the logistics and introduce the first five service projects, Dr. Dan Porterfield gave a brief address, focusing on the importance of bringing students together and his hope that "25 Days" would last for the next "40 years."

That would give us 1,000 days of service.

Perhaps more important, the Kick-Off Reception Occurred after the first service project. Teach For America and GOLE travelled to the Seat Pleasant Elementary School where, as a part of National African-American Read-In Day, the participating Georgetown students spoke about the importance of reading and then read to classrooms.
