Day 5

The fifth day of "25 Days" saw a triple-entente between The Baker Scholars, Patrick Healy Fellows and YLead. The following is a reaction by Patrick Healy Fellow Xaivier Ringer to the service project:
The Baker Scholars, Patrick Healy Fellows and Young Leaders in Education About Diversity (YLEAD) traveled to The SEED School of DC, a public, charter, boarding school Tuesday February 5. Despite traffic the groups arrived with energy and excitement to meet with the juniors and sophomores of the SEED School. We began by introducing ourselves to each other before entering the school stating our names, year and organization. Our collaboration was to discuss our common threads and understand community. We managed to conduct a successful privilege line, an activity that asked students to step forward or backwards depending on their privileges or lack of privileges, respectfully. Each Georgetown member was stimulated by the visual representation of our differences, and more importantly SEED students articulated their thoughts on the so called lack of privileges they were projected to have based on their race or socio-economic background. Some responded saying the results were "surprising", "revealing", "manipulative", and "expected".

Each group had a chance to bond with the SEED Students within our short time frame, 7:00-9:00pm, allowing everyone to see a different perspective and share an experience within the same space and time. I can not help but think each of us thought deeper about our position in society as students of both Georgetown University and The SEED School of DC. We know we are all privileged simply by our consciousness to have such a conversation and to share it with one another.
